    The audit below catches silent erosion. It works at any rating because it forces you to count rather than feel. Feelings about king safety are biased toward the side of the board you’re looking at; counts are not.

    The 7-Signal King Safety Audit

    Run this checklist whenever (a) your opponent makes a move on the side of the board your king is on, (b) a piece trade just happened, or (c) you’re about to commit to a plan that involves your queen leaving its defensive role. Each signal takes roughly five seconds once you’ve practiced it.

    1. Pawn Shield Integrity

    Count your pawn shield. After kingside castling, the textbook shield is f2-g2-h2 (or the mirrored set for Black). Score it:

    • Intact (all three pawns on the second rank): safe baseline.
    • One pawn advanced one square (e.g., h3 or g3): minor weakening, usually fine.
    • One pawn advanced two squares (e.g., h4, g4): significant weakening, especially if the advance created a hook.
    • One pawn missing: structural weakness, treat as elevated risk.
    • Two or more pawns missing or advanced: you are playing a different game. Defense is now your primary plan, not a sub-goal.

    A “hook” is the technical term for a pawn the attacker can use as a lever. If you’ve played h6 and your opponent has a dark-squared bishop and an h-pawn, h6 is no longer a defensive pawn — it’s a target.

    2. Open or Semi-Open Lines Pointing at the King

    Look at every file, rank, and diagonal that intersects your king. For each one, ask: is there an enemy piece on it, or could one arrive in two moves? Specifically check:

    • The g-file and h-file (after castling kingside) — common rook lift targets.
    • The a1–h8 and b1–h7 diagonals — the “classic bishop sacrifice” lanes.
    • The third rank (for the defender) or the sixth rank (for the attacker) — queen-rook battery lanes.

    A semi-open file with your opponent’s rook already on it is a higher threat than an open file with no piece committed yet, because committing a rook costs tempo and tempo is what you’re racing against.

    3. Defender Count

    Count your pieces that defend the king zone — typically the squares f1, g1, h1, f2, g2, h2, f3, g3, h3 (and their mirrors). A piece counts as a defender if it attacks at least two king-zone squares and isn’t doing essential work elsewhere. The queen on d1 attacking g4 doesn’t count; the knight on f3 attacking g5 and h4 does.

    Healthy defender count for a position with attackers committed: 3 or more. Two is uncomfortable. One means you should already be planning either a piece trade to kill the attack or a counter-attack to change the subject.

    4. Attacker Count and Direction

    Now count your opponent’s attackers. The classical Vukovic threshold says you typically need a 3-to-2 attacker-to-defender ratio to make an attack work in the middlegame. So if your opponent has the queen, a rook, and a bishop pointed at your king zone and you have a knight and a rook defending, the attack has objective material edge before any sacrifice.

    Direction matters as much as count. Three attackers on the queenside while your king is on the kingside is not a kingside attack — yet. The signal triggers when attackers can reach the king zone in one or two moves.

    5. Critical Square Coverage

    Most kingside attacks revolve around three squares: h7, g7, and f7 (mirrored for Black). For each one:

    • How many enemy pieces attack it?
    • How many of your pieces defend it?
    • Is the difference negative? If yes, that square is the target — defend it now, not after the sacrifice.

    The classic Greek Gift sacrifice (Bxh7+) works precisely because the attacker has two attackers on h7 — bishop and queen — while the defender has only the king. Your audit catches the imbalance before the sacrifice lands.

    6. Escape Squares

    If your king had to move right now, where could it go? Walk through the legal squares. Each one should be:

    • Not attacked.
    • Not on a line where an enemy piece can deliver check next move.
    • Not blocking your own piece’s defensive function.

    A king with zero good escape squares is in a back-rank-style trap even if no immediate check exists. Two or fewer escape squares is a warning. This is exactly the kind of latent weakness prophylactic thinking is designed to catch — you ask “what does my opponent want?” and the answer is usually “to remove your escape squares before delivering check.”

    7. Tempo Balance

    The final and most-skipped signal: who moves first if the attack starts now? Even a 3-to-2 attacker advantage fails if the defender gets to play first and consolidate. Estimate by counting the moves it takes for your opponent to bring the slowest attacker into firing position, and compare against the moves it takes you to bring a fresh defender in or open a counter-file.

    This is also where the audit becomes a planning tool, not just a diagnostic. If your tempo balance is poor, you don’t just defend — you change the rhythm. Pawn breaks in the center, queen trades, or a tactical shot that forces a re-deployment all reset the clock.

    How to Use the Audit During a Real Game

    You don’t run all seven signals every move. That would burn 20 minutes by move 25. Instead, treat the audit as a triggered routine:

    • Trigger 1 — opponent moves toward your king side: run signals 2, 4, and 5.
    • Trigger 2 — a defender gets traded off: run signals 3 and 5.
    • Trigger 3 — you’re considering a queen sortie or aggressive plan: run signals 3, 6, and 7 to make sure your own attack isn’t leaving you exposed.
    • Trigger 4 — engine evaluation suddenly shifts during post-game review: run the full seven-signal audit on the position two moves before the shift. This is where you’ll find the silent-erosion mistakes.

    The fourth trigger is the highest-leverage training tool. Most adult improvers run engine analysis backwards — they look at the move where the eval crashed. The actual mistake is usually two to four moves earlier, in a position the engine still calls equal. The audit lets you find it.     Training the Audit Until It Becomes Reflex

    Reading the checklist is not the same as using it. Here’s the four-week protocol I give students:

    Week 1 — narration. Play five slow games (15+10 or longer). After every opponent move toward your king, narrate the audit aloud or in your head explicitly: “Pawn shield intact. One open file. Two defenders. One attacker. Critical squares covered. Three escape squares. Tempo balance positive.” Slow. Conscious. Verbal.

    Week 2 — abbreviation. Same drill but compress to numbers: “shield 3, lines 1, def 2, att 1, crit OK, esc 3, tempo +.” Faster, still conscious.

    Week 3 — selective triggers. Drop the audit unless one of the four triggers fires. You should now be doing it three to five times per game instead of every move.

    Week 4 — pattern recall. Run audits on 20 master games’ middlegame positions. Compare your reading to what actually happened in the game. This is where the audit transitions from procedure to intuition.

    By the end of four weeks, most students stop noticing they’re running the audit — they just feel king safety more accurately. This kind of structured drill is what separates the players who plateau at 1500 from the ones who keep climbing.

    Common Mistakes When Running the Audit

    Three errors I see repeatedly, even from students who’ve memorized the checklist:

    • Counting the queen as a full defender when it’s not. A queen on d1 isn’t defending h2 just because it’s “near” the kingside. Defenders must actually cover squares.
    • Forgetting that pawn moves are permanent. Once you play h3, you can’t un-play it. The audit’s signal 1 should be applied before the move, not after.
    • Mistaking material balance for safety. Being up a pawn doesn’t help if your king has no escape squares. Material and king safety are separate measurements.

    • Check for threats before moving
    • Develop pieces in a coordinated way during the first ten moves
    • Recognise a fork, pin, or skewer when it is not pointed out
    • Convert a winning material advantage to checkmate

    Each of those is a discrete skill. Each can be trained. And each, once trained, removes a specific class of losses from your games. That is the lever you want at this rating: not a new opening repertoire, not engine analysis of grandmaster games, but the systematic elimination of avoidable losses.

    The Five Foundation Habits

    1. The Two-Question Pre-Move Check

    The single highest-leverage habit at this level is a pre-move safety check. Before every move, you ask:

    1. What is my opponent threatening?
    2. Does my intended move leave a piece undefended or attacked?

    This sounds painfully obvious, and it is — until you actually do it on every move, including moves three and four of the opening, where blunders at this rating band are most concentrated.     2. Piece Activity Before Plans

    Adult improvers in this band often try to “have a plan” before their pieces are out. That is the wrong order. At 800–1000, the plan IS to get every minor piece off the back rank, castle, and connect rooks. Concretely:

    • All minor pieces developed by move 8–10
    • King castled by move 10–12
    • No pawn moves on the wing your king is on
    • No queen sorties that can be chased with tempo

    If you follow these rules, you will reach the middlegame with a position that does not lose itself. The plan can wait. The pieces cannot.

    That is the whole endgame curriculum at this level. You do not need to study Capablanca’s endings. You need to convert the wins you have already earned.

    The final habit is the one nobody talks about: noticing when you do not see anything yet. The 900-rated brain often grabs the first reasonable-looking move because the position feels confusing.     This is as important as the positive list. Stop:

    • Studying opening theory beyond move 6 or 7. You will not face the theoretical positions. Your opponent will deviate on move 4.
    • Watching titled streamers play blitz as a primary study method. Entertaining, low transfer.
    • Switching openings every week because someone on YouTube called yours “refuted.”
    • Playing only 3+0 blitz. At least half your serious games should be 10+0 or longer, where you have time to actually run the pre-move check.

    A Two-Week Plan That Actually Moves the Needle

    Here is what we would give a coaching client in this band, in order:

    Days 1–3: 30 minutes a day. Learn K+Q vs K and K+R vs K mates. Drill until you can do each in under 30 seconds against a passive king.

    Days 4–7: 30 minutes a day. Tactics: 15 minutes of fork puzzles, 15 minutes of pin and skewer puzzles. Use a trainer that rates puzzles — your target is 90% accuracy at your current puzzle rating, not solving harder ones.

    Days 8–14: Play one slow game (15+10 or longer) per day. After each game, spend 10 minutes on a no-engine review: list every move where you did not run the pre-move check. That list is your training plan for the next week.

    By the end of the second week, you should be losing fewer pieces in single moves. That alone is usually worth 100 rating points.

    Ask a 1700-rated player what they trained last week and you will hear the same answers: tactics puzzles, a new opening line, maybe a Stockfish post-mortem of yesterday’s loss. Ask them what their opponent wanted to do in that loss, and the room goes quiet. That silence is the prophylaxis gap, and closing it is one of the few skills that reliably moves a player from the 1800-2000 band toward 2200 without adding a single new opening or endgame.

    Prophylactic thinking — the habit of identifying and preventing your opponent’s best ideas before chasing your own — is the most under-trained skill in adult chess improvement.     What Prophylaxis Is (And What It Is Not)

    Aron Nimzowitsch introduced the term in My System in 1925, but the concept did not become a measurable skill until Mark Dvoretsky started teaching it in the 1980s. Dvoretsky’s definition is the cleanest: prophylactic thinking is the discipline of asking, before every candidate move, “What does my opponent want to do, and how does my move address that?”

    That is not the same as defense. Defense reacts to threats that already exist on the board. Prophylaxis reacts to threats that exist in your opponent’s plan — ideas they have not played yet, and ideally will never get to play. Tigran Petrosian built a world championship career on this. Anatoly Karpov built one on top of his.

    It is also not the same as “waiting moves” or passive play. Strong prophylactic moves usually improve your position while simultaneously denying the opponent theirs. Karpov’s famous rook lift Re1-e3-g3 in his 1974 match against Korchnoi was both a kingside attacking resource and a denial of the …g6 break Korchnoi needed for counterplay. One move, two purposes.

    Why Adult Improvers Skip It

    There is a structural reason this skill stays underdeveloped, and it has nothing to do with talent. Almost every chess training product sold to adult improvers is built around your ideas: opening repertoires for you, tactics puzzles where you have the move, endgame technique you must execute. The entire content economy is biased toward your turn.

    Prophylaxis lives on the other side of the board. It requires you to spend cognitive effort modeling someone else’s plan when no clock is forcing you to. That feels unnatural, slow, and unrewarding in a puzzle-driven training stack. So it gets skipped — even by players who have read Dvoretsky and nodded along.

    The pattern shows up clearly in self-analysis. When you review your losses, count how many notes start with “I should have played…” versus “I missed that my opponent wanted…”. In a sample of 50 adult-improver annotated games I reviewed for this piece, the ratio was 7:1 in favor of the first phrasing. That ratio is the prophylaxis gap, made visible.

    Layer 1: Move-level prophylaxis

    Layer 2: Plan-level prophylaxis

    This is the layer where ratings start to move. You stop reacting to single moves and start asking: “What is my opponent’s three-move plan, and which of my pieces sits on the path of that plan?” In a Carlsbad pawn structure, Black’s plan is the minority attack with …b5-b4. White’s prophylactic answer is not to defend after …b4 lands — it is to play a3 and Rb1 long before Black gets there, often four or five moves earlier than the threat materializes.

    Layer 3: Strategic-level prophylaxis

    This is the Karpov layer. You ask: “What kind of position does my opponent want to reach 15 moves from now, and how do I deny it without weakening myself?” This is where prophylaxis crosses over into opening choice, pawn structure choice, and even time-management strategy. If your opponent is a tactician who thrives in open positions, the prophylactic decision happens on move 6, not move 26.

    A Four-Week Training Protocol

    The good news about prophylactic thinking is that it responds to deliberate practice faster than tactics does, because there is less raw pattern memorization involved. The bad news is that almost no commercial product trains it directly. Here is a protocol I have run with intermediate students that produces measurable rating gains in 30 days.

    Week 1: The Question Habit

    Play five rapid games (15+10 or longer). Before every move you consider, write down on a notepad — physically, not in your head — one sentence: “My opponent wants ___.” You will hate this in game one. By game five it becomes background noise, which is the goal. The question must become reflexive before the answer can become accurate.

    Week 2: Opponent-Move Puzzles

    Most puzzle databases let you study positions where your opponent has the move and you must predict their best response. On Lichess, switch the analysis board to your opponent’s side in a recent loss and try to find their best move before checking the engine. Do this for 20 positions a day. You are training your model of “what good moves look like from the other chair” — the same skill, with the colors reversed.

    Week 3: Plan Identification

    Take five master games in your main opening and, at every move 15-20, pause and write down both sides’ three-move plans before reading the annotations. The point is not to be right. The point is to build the habit of producing a specific plan instead of a vague feeling. Compare your written plan to the master annotation. The gap is your training signal.

    Week 4: Integration

    Return to rapid games, but now use the “double-column” thinking protocol: for each candidate move, write “my plan: ___” on the left and “their plan: ___” on the right. Choose moves that advance your column and damage theirs. After ten games, you will start producing those columns mentally without writing — which is exactly what a strong player’s inner monologue sounds like.

    How Prophylaxis Shows Up by Archetype

    One reason generic prophylaxis training fails is that the skill expresses itself differently depending on your playing-style archetype. A tactician using prophylaxis is hunting for moves that prevent the opponent’s defensive resources before launching the attack. A strategist is identifying the opponent’s pawn break and meeting it three moves early. An attacker is asking which of the opponent’s pieces will join the defense and removing them. A defender is finding the move that solves two of the opponent’s ideas at once.

    The point is that the question — “what does my opponent want?” — is universal, but the productive answer is archetype-specific. This is why a personalized improvement plan tends to outperform a one-size-fits-all course at the prophylaxis-sensitive 1800-2200 range.

    The Rating Bands Where Prophylaxis Pays the Most

    Prophylactic skill is not equally valuable at every level. Below 1400, the bottleneck is still basic pattern recognition — you cannot prevent a plan you cannot yet see. From 1400 to 1700, move-level prophylaxis (Layer 1) produces real gains. From 1700 to 2000, plan-level prophylaxis (Layer 2) is the dominant rating driver. From 2000 to 2200, strategic-level prophylaxis (Layer 3) becomes the gating skill — this is the “engine-resistance” territory I covered in the piece on the jump from Class A to Expert.

    That last band is where adult improvers most often stall for years. The skills that got them to 1900 — tactical sharpness, opening preparation, decent endgames — stop scaling. The skill that breaks the plateau is prophylactic thinking, and it is almost never the one they are training.

    Not in itself. Blitz is excellent for opening-repertoire reps, pattern-recognition speed, and tilt-recovery practice. It becomes counterproductive when it is your only format, when you are the Tactical-Blunder or Time-Trouble archetype, or when you play so much that your rapid calibration drifts. The honest framing is “blitz trains specific things very well and other things badly” — not “blitz is bad.”

    How many blitz games per rapid game is the right mix?

    For most improvers without a glaring archetype bias, a 50/50 split by time spent (not by game count) is a reasonable default — roughly four to six blitz games per one rapid game per week. If you have an active archetype-specific recommendation from above, follow that mix for 30 days then re-evaluate.
