Almost every adult improver reaches the same humiliating moment: two pieces up in a dead-won endgame, king and bishop and knight against a lone king, and they cannot force mate before the fifty-move rule snatches the point away. The bishop-and-knight checkmate has a reputation as the hardest of the “basic” mates, and that reputation is earned. But the reason most players fail is not that the technique is difficult. It is that they tried to memorize a sequence of moves instead of learning a small set of ideas, and under clock pressure the memorized sequence evaporates.

This guide takes the opposite approach. Forget the exact moves. If you understand three jobs, one destination, and one shape, you can reconstruct the mate at the board every time — even with two minutes left and your heart pounding.

The one fact that removes 90% of the panic

Here is the single most important thing to internalize, and it is the thing rushed tutorials bury: the mate can only happen in a corner your bishop controls. A bishop covers one color forever. So a dark-squared bishop mates the enemy king on a dark corner — a1 or h8. A light-squared bishop mates on a light corner — h1 or a8.

The defending king knows this too (or plays as if it does). It will sprint toward the “safe” corner, the one your bishop can never touch. Your entire task is to refuse that escape and herd the king to the correct corner. Once you accept that the destination is fixed by the color of your bishop, the whole endgame stops feeling like chaos and starts feeling like sheepdog work.

The three jobs, named so you never forget them

Every bishop-and-knight mate is the same three jobs in the same order. Name them out loud when you practice and they become automatic:

Job 1 — Herd to any edge

From the opening position of the endgame, you do not care which edge or which corner yet. You simply use all three of your pieces together to shrink the enemy king’s living space and push it to the rim of the board. The king cannot be mated in the center, so step one is always eviction from the center. Keep your king close, use the bishop to build walls, and use the knight to plug the holes the bishop leaves. Job 2 — Walk the king to the right corner

This is where players lose the point. The king reaches an edge but it is running toward the wrong corner — the one your bishop cannot cover. You now have to escort it along the edge, from the wrong corner toward the right one, without ever letting it dart back into the center. This escort is the only genuinely technical part of the endgame, and it is where the shape below does the heavy lifting.

Job 3 — Trap and deliver mate

Once the king is boxed into the correct corner, the mate is a short, forced tidy-up. Your king takes the two squares in front of the enemy king, the knight covers the flight square, and the bishop gives check on the long diagonal. Two or three moves, done.

Delétang’s triangles: the shape that makes it memorable

The classical way to organize Job 2 is Delétang’s triangles, and it is the most memorable image in all of basic endgame technique. Instead of thinking about individual squares, picture your bishop drawing a triangle in the corner region, and the enemy king trapped inside it. There are three nested triangles, each smaller than the last, and your job is to walk the king from the big triangle into the medium one, then into the small one where mate lives.

Picture a dark-squared bishop and the target corner h8. The largest triangle has its long edge running along the a1–h8 diagonal — the king is confined to the band of squares above it. Once your king and knight support that diagonal, you shift the bishop to draw a smaller triangle closer to h8, and the enemy king is forced to shuffle into the tighter space. Repeat once more and the king is squeezed into the final tiny triangle around the mating corner.

The beauty of the triangle image is that you never have to remember a move order. You only have to remember: draw the triangle, bring the king and knight up to hold its edge, then draw a smaller triangle. Three triangles, shrinking. That is the entire second phase in one sentence.

The knight’s “W” and why it exists

While the bishop draws triangles, the knight has one specific chore: it patrols the escape squares along the edge so the king cannot slip past on its way to the wrong corner. If you trace the squares a well-placed knight visits during this escort, they form a shape like the letter W (some coaches call it the “M,” depending on the side). You do not need to memorize the exact squares. You need to remember the reason: the knight is the short-range piece, so it hops from control-square to control-square just ahead of the king, always cutting off the next flight square. When you feel lost, ask a single question — “which square is the king trying to run to next?” — and put your knight so that square is covered. That instinct rebuilds the W maneuver from scratch.

A mental walkthrough, in ideas not notation

Play the whole thing as a story rather than a sequence. The king is loose in the center: you march your own king up, plant the bishop on a long diagonal, and drop the knight into a supporting square so the three of them form a moving wall. The enemy king backs to an edge — say it heads for the light corner while you hold a dark-squared bishop, the wrong corner. No panic: you now begin the escort. Bishop draws the first big triangle, king steps up to deny the central escape, knight covers the one edge square the king wants. The king is forced to trudge along the rim toward the dark corner. You redraw a smaller triangle, repeat the king-and-knight support, and the living space collapses. In the final corner, your king faces the enemy king a knight’s-distance away, the knight seals the last flight square, and the bishop checks. Mate.

Reading about this mate does almost nothing; the skill is entirely in the fingers. Set up king, bishop, and knight against a lone king in an analysis board or against an engine set to defend, and force the mate against real resistance until you can do it in well under thirty moves without thinking. Track two numbers as you drill: how many moves you used, and whether you ever let the king reach the center again. The three mistakes that cost the full point

Stalemate at the death

The most painful error. As the king is squeezed into the final corner, always leave it a legal move until the instant you deliver mate. Before every check in the corner, ask: “does the king still have one square?” If the answer is no and it is not check, you have stalemated a won game.

The center leak

During the edge escort, one careless bishop or knight move can open a diagonal back to the middle, and the king bolts. If that happens you have not lost — you have simply reset to Job 1 and burned moves. Prevent it by never moving a piece until you have checked that the central escape square is covered by something else first.

Running out of moves

The fifty-move rule is the real opponent. The mate from the worst starting position takes about thirty-three moves with perfect play, which leaves a comfortable margin — if you do not waste tempi wandering.
