Every adult improver has heard a commentator say “d5 is a gaping hole in Black’s position” and nodded along without knowing what to actually do about it. You can see the weak square. Your opponent can see it. And yet, ten moves later, nothing happened on d5 and you lost to a kingside attack you never saw coming.

Here is the uncomfortable truth: knowing a square is weak is worth almost nothing. Rating points come from the three steps that follow — securing it, occupying it with the right piece, and converting the occupation into something your opponent must respond to. What Actually Makes a Square Weak? The Two-Question Test

Most club players call any unoccupied square in enemy territory “weak.” That vagueness is why they never exploit one. A square is genuinely weak only if it passes both of these questions:

Question 1: Can an enemy pawn ever attack it?

Not “is it attacked by a pawn right now” — can a pawn ever get there? If Black has played …e5 and …c5 in front of a d4 square, no pawn can ever touch d4 again. That is a permanent feature of the position. If the pawn could still advance to kick your piece, the square is not weak; it is merely unoccupied, and there is a rating class of difference between the two.

Question 2: Is it in useful territory?

A hole on the edge of the board on a2 rarely matters. Weak squares matter when they sit on your opponent’s third or fourth rank, in the center or near their king, because a piece parked there interferes with their coordination. The classic real estate: d5 and f5 against a Sicilian structure, e5 against a French structure, d6 against a Benoni, and any square in front of an isolated pawn. The Squatter’s Rights System: Four Steps From Hole to Full Point

Step 1 — Spot: scan for holes on every pawn move

Weak squares are created by pawn moves and pawn trades — nothing else. So the efficient habit is not “scan all 64 squares every turn” (nobody does that) but a targeted check: every time a pawn moves — yours or your opponent’s — ask which squares it stopped defending forever. When your opponent plays …g6, the squares f6 and h6 just lost their best defender. When they push …c5 in a Carlsbad structure, d5 becomes a candidate. Step 2 — Evict-proof: count the defenders before you move in

This is the step club players skip, and it is where most “outposts” collapse. Before occupying, ask: which enemy pieces can challenge my piece on that square, and can I trade off or neutralize them first? A knight on d5 is not an outpost if Black still owns a light-squared bishop and a knight that can reach e7 or f6 comfortably — it is a trade offer. Step 3 — Settle: put the right piece on the square

Not all pieces gain equally from an outpost. The hierarchy, with reasons:

Knight — the ideal squatter. A knight is the only piece whose power depends almost entirely on its address. On its own first rank it is a spectator; on a protected sixth-rank outpost it is frequently worth more than a rook. Knights also attack squares of the opposite color to the one they stand on, so a knight on a light-square hole attacks dark squares the defender’s remaining bishop may not cover.

Bishop — good, with a caveat. A bishop on an outpost is strong only if it also has open diagonals from there. A bishop can be excellent from long range anyway, so it gains less from moving in.

Rook — powerful but evict-prone. A rook on an advanced outpost (the classic rook on the seventh, or a rook lifted to a protected sixth-rank square) can be devastating, but minor pieces harass rooks cheaply. Rooks usually occupy outposts after minor pieces have been traded.

Queen — almost never. Any piece evicts a queen with tempo. Use the queen to exploit the files and diagonals the outpost piece opens, not to squat.

Step 4 — Cash in: convert the outpost into a concrete gain

An occupied outpost wins nothing by itself; it wins by forcing concessions. After settling, look for the three standard payoffs. First, the fork of duties: an outpost piece typically attacks two sectors at once, so play on the side where your opponent is now one defender short. Second, the favorable trade: if your opponent gives up a rook or bishop for your monster knight, take the material or the structural damage and say thank you. Third, the squeeze: sometimes the piece just sits there while your opponent’s pieces tie themselves to passive squares — then you open a second front. Passive defense against a stable outpost loses slowly but reliably.

How to Create Weak Squares on Purpose

Strong players do not wait for holes; they manufacture them. Three reliable tools:

Provoke pawn advances near the king. Moves like Ng5 or Qd3 (eyeing h7) often provoke …h6 or …g6. Each of those pawn moves creates permanent holes (f6/h6 or f5/h5) that outlive the attack that provoked them.

Trade the defender pawn. A well-timed pawn exchange can remove the only pawn that could ever cover a key square. The minority attack is the industrial-scale version of this idea: the b5xc6 trade leaves c6 backward and d5-adjacent squares weak.

Fix the structure with a pawn lever. Meeting a wing attack with a central pawn advance often locks the enemy structure onto squares that concede a color complex. Outpost Play by Archetype

Attackers: treat outposts as forward operating bases, not trophies. A knight on f5 is worth more as the spearhead of a mating attack than as a positional asset. Occupy, then strike within a few moves while the defender is still reorganizing.

Tacticians: outpost pieces generate tactics automatically — forks from the advanced square, sacrifices on the squares it supports. After settling, run your normal tactical scan; the hit rate near an outpost is roughly double.

Strategists: you will love Step 2. Your games should feature the slow version: trade evictors over ten moves, occupy, squeeze. Your risk is over-preparing — when the payoff is available, take it.

Defenders: play the system in reverse. Every time your pawn wants to advance, run the Two-Question Test on the squares it abandons. Declining one natural-looking pawn move per game is often worth 50 rating points of avoided suffering.

A One-Week Training Plan

Days 1–2: take five of your recent losses and find every square that passed the Two-Question Test — for both sides. Most players discover they conceded two or three permanent holes per game without noticing.

Days 3–4: play your normal games with a single rule: every pawn move (yours and theirs) triggers the scan from Step 1. Write down the holes after the game.

Day 5: study one classic outpost game slowly. Karpov, Petrosian, or Carlsbad-structure model games are ideal; watch how many moves are spent on Step 2 before occupation.
